Application and OS-based tests

Tool

Application and OS-based tests are a category of external tests used in Transmeta's Crusoe VLIW/x86 testing program, encompassing industry-standard tests, commercial applications, operating systems, and vendor acceptance suites that exercise the hardware and software stack under realistic and acceptance-criteria-driven conditions.

Application and OS-based tests

Application and OS-based tests refer to the use of real-world applications and complete operating systems as test stimuli within Transmeta's Crusoe validation program. Rather than relying solely on hand-written or automatically generated instruction- and system-level tests, the Crusoe team treated commercially available applications and OSes themselves as tests, alongside industry-standard tests and acceptance suites supplied by individual makers (e.g., OEMs or OS vendors).

Applications and OSes are explicitly used as tests in the environment; automated farm testing is the mechanism to run these at scale.

[1] External x86 tests include those bought from other companies, industry-standard tests, applications and OSes used as tests, and acceptance suites used by individual makers. Transmeta Crusoe Hardware, Software, and Development
[2] The term 'test' implies an acceptance or rejection criteria; some benchmarks have a checkable results file, but many do not, and 'crashes' and 'fails to complete' are understood as checkable failures. Transmeta Crusoe Hardware, Software, and Development
[3] Benchmarks are not designed for fault isolation, but some failures are easy to diagnose and expose bugs not found by any other test, so these failures are at least triaged. Transmeta Crusoe Hardware, Software, and Development
[4] The in-house farm allows automated initialization of CMS, the BIOS, and the hard disk, so any machine can be allocated, configured, used for remote interactive debugging, and then reallocated and reconfigured without human intervention for another use such as batch testing.
