ASIC synthesis

Concept

ASIC synthesis is the design step in which a hardware description (typically RTL) is transformed into a gate-level netlist targeted at an application-specific integrated circuit implementation. It is widely used in research and engineering workflows to obtain realistic area, timing, and power estimates for accelerator and IP block designs, as well as to produce manufacturable layouts for tape-out.

Definition

ASIC synthesis refers to the automated process of translating a register-transfer level (RTL) hardware description—commonly written in Verilog or VHDL—into a gate-level netlist that is targeted at a specific ASIC technology node. The resulting netlist feeds into downstream physical design steps such as floorplanning, placement, clock-tree synthesis, and routing, ultimately producing a manufacturable chip layout.
