Overview
3DNow! is an extension of the x86 instruction set architecture. It is referenced in academic literature that examines the complexity of modern instruction sets and the challenges of building correct instruction decoders.
Status as an x86 Extension
The x86 architecture has accumulated at least 13 extensions since its creation (depending on how they are counted), and now contains hundreds of opcodes that were not present initially. 3DNow! is among these extensions to the x86 ISA.
Decoder Maintenance Issues
Extensions such as 3DNow! can produce new interactions between opcodes and operands that affect existing instructions, requiring decoders to be updated accordingly. As a concrete example of this difficulty, the GNU decoder is reported to have only incompletely deprecated 3DNow!, in contrast to a more thorough treatment by other decoders.
